Everyone aspires a bright white smile, but teeth naturally have a huge range of shades. Tooth discoloration is usually caused either by a disease or poor oral hygiene. It is most of the times, a result of the food or beverage choices we make, or just the natural aging of the tooth.

According to a recent study, 71% of women say that they get attracted to a man based on his smile. Having an attractive smile will actually make you more popular with women.

Dating is not the only place where whiter teeth are noticed. An independent research firm has found that if you have a bright smile, that might also contribute to getting your dream job. Reason? A sparkling wide smile can make you stand out amongst all the applicants. Here are some useful tips for keeping your teeth pearly white, healthy and bright.

Limit Staining Foods and Beverages

Beverages such as coffee, red wine, soda, etc. are known for staining teeth. But that doesn’t mean you have to keep a no-no for them. If possible, drink beverages known to stain teeth through a straw to prevent their direct contact with your teeth.

Moreover, brush your teeth soon after consuming tooth staining foods or beverages to limit their effects on the color of your teeth. If brushing is not possible, try to at least rinse your mouth with water.

The color found in foods such as beets, ketchup, blueberries, etc. originates from chromogens, which are deeply pigmented molecules. Unfortunately, these molecules stick to the enamel on your teeth, resulting in stains.

Get Plenty of Calcium in Your Diet

Some tooth discoloration is caused due to the erosion of enamel; exposing the dentin underneath, which is yellowish in color. Therefore, consuming calcium-rich foods will not only strengthen the enamel of your teeth but will help keep your teeth pearly white too. Calcium-rich foods, such as milk, cheese, yoghurt, and broccoli, may help protect your teeth from enamel erosion.

Brush After a Meal

Brushing your teeth right after you have food can also help prevent stains.

Daily brushing and flossing, along with regular cleanings at the dentist’s office, prevent the build-up of plaque on your teeth.

Eat Raw Vegetables and Fruits

Not only they are good for our bodies, but they are also good for our teeth. Foods such as apples, carrots, and nuts help to remove surface stains as well as a plaque that leads to cavities. Coarse vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots & celery have whitening effects only when you eat them raw. Being fibrous they’re difficult to chew, so as you grind them up, they remove superficial stains from the surface of your teeth. The more you chew, the more saliva the mouth produces, which helps in the break-down of stains.

Rinse Your Mouth with Water After Eating Citrus Fruits

Fruits like oranges, lemons, and limes are good for their vitamin C but they are extremely bad for your teeth as it erodes the enamel. Subsequently, aiding in staining your teeth. Rinse your mouth with water after eating them, to avoid your enamel from being eroded.

Choosing Lipsticks

Ladies! Choose a medium coral or light red lipstick. These colors will make your teeth look white and bright, whereas lighter-colored lipsticks tend to bring out the yellow in the teeth.

Eat Nuts & Seeds

Seeds and nuts necessarily work as Exfoliants for your teeth. The abrasive texture of sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, and cashews can strip stains from the enamel of your tooth, removing away all the discoloration and whitens the surface of teeth.

Stop Smoking

Smoking is very torturous for your teeth. You may get them clean when you visit the dentist, but continuing to smoke in between the appointments will bring you back to square one. Cigarettes contain nicotine and tar which eat away at your gums. It also increases bacterial production and subsequent plaque in the mouth, contributing to gum disease and tooth decay. Smokers are also at a higher risk for tooth loss and oral cancer. Avoid smoking and any form of tobacco, both can cause tooth discoloration. Once you are done, rinse your mouth with water to avoid staining.

Chew Sugar-free Gums

Chewing gum increases saliva production. Chewing sugar-free gum freshens your breath and also helps to get rid of excess food residue in between brushings. Saliva has a natural antibacterial property which helps to prevent bacterial plaque build-up and dental decay.

Try Oil Pulling

Coconut oil pulling can help you achieve naturally white teeth. Many people are said to find their teeth becoming whiter and naturally healthier by applying coconut oil to their gums and teeth after they brush.

Simply put a teaspoon of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around and between your teeth for five to twenty minutes, or you can also add a few drops on your toothbrush and brush your teeth. Since coconut oil has antimicrobial properties, so it is a great option for cleaning and protecting your gums too.

You may be thinking, “how do I make my teeth whiter?” Tooth whitening is a common procedure, with many options available in the market.
