How to Choose the Right Laptop

In this article, we’ll talk about what you need to consider first of all when buying a new laptop and after that, at least be satisfied. And yes, dear – this does not mean the best. The stereotype “high price = high quality” has been hammered into our heads for years. In general, let’s talk about everything in order.

Size classification

Laptops differ not only in color, cost, and firm. You need to look more globally: at its characteristics, monitor width, RAM, and more. When choosing a gadget, you first need to understand for what purpose you are buying it. For working on documents, watching movies, and hanging out on social networks, or you want to buy a gaming laptop.

Netbooks with a screen diagonal of up to 11 inches are considered a low-budget option and usually have weak components. Already starting from 14 inches, you can pick up a good laptop.

The most popular among buyers are models with a diagonal of 15.6 inches. These laptops are perfect for working remotely at home, for watching videos, and will be a good alternative to conventional desktop computers.

Larger laptops over 17 inches are ideal for both work and play. They have powerful components, and good characteristics, but such models are also the most expensive.

Screen resolution matters

The more pixels an image has, the sharper, brighter, and more detailed the image will be. The graininess of the screen is also of great importance, because the lower it is, the better. How to choose the right screen resolution and not overpay for the cost?

If you buy a laptop with a popular diagonal of 15.6 inches, then a resolution (1366 x 768) will work well for it. There will be no graininess while the display image is large enough. This resolution is comparable to the resolution familiar to many users (1920 x 1080).

If you prefer to use gadgets with large monitors, then you should remember one important detail: high resolution and a small screen size will give you a small image with small fonts, which will eventually have to be scaled. Which in the end can lead to failures in applications and programs on the device, which may be poorly optimized or outdated. The exception is Mac-OS laptops with a resolution of (2304 x 1440), which adapt to any application.

What are the types of matrix?

The laptop matrix is a liquid crystal display with a lamp or LED backlight. In other words, this is his monitor. There are several types of matrices:

  • TN+Film matrix is the most budget option. Viewing angles are much worse than other types, which greatly breaks and distorts color reproduction.
  • IPS matrix – already has a good viewing angle and contrast. The disadvantage of such a matrix is the creation of a glow effect – dark shades when viewed from different angles.
  • SVA matrix – has an increased viewing angle, good contrast, and is already many times more expensive than other previous types.
  • The last type of matrix – IGZO – is not yet so popular with buyers, but it outperforms the previous types of matrices in all respects. It has a large viewing angle, high contrast, and brightness of the monitor. But in terms of cost, this is the most expensive type of matrix.

Screen coverage

There are two types of screen coating – matte and glossy. The matte finish does not create glare, and the eyes do not get a lot of strain when working with such a monitor. The glossy coating has a high contrast ratio, and more saturated colors of the monitor. But it can be very difficult to visually feel the difference and distinguish these two coatings from each other.

Laptops with a glossy screen are cheaper than matte ones, since the latter have a rather complicated production. But it is advisable not to save on monitors and buy them with a matte finish in order to protect your eyesight during prolonged work at a laptop.

CPU

If you buy a laptop only for working with documents, or for watching movies and videos, then you can not focus on choosing a processor. This should be done first of all by those who buy a laptop for games.

You should take a quad-core AMD Ryzen 5/7 or Intel Core i5 / i7 class processor. If you buy a less powerful processor, then many games on it simply will not meet the system requirements.

RAM

The amount of RAM is very important even if you just plan to watch movies and spend time on social networks. With a large number of open browser tabs, the laptop will not work well – this will happen from a lack of RAM.

If you are a gamer and you like a model with a small memory size, or the desired model beats the price, then you can go the other way. You need to make sure that this laptop has support for expanding RAM. When the main memory is full, at any time it will be possible to connect an additional operational one and continue to download games and other applications.

Storage device

There are two types of storage devices: HDD (magnetic disks) and SSD (solid-state drive).

  • SSD drives are more expensive than conventional magnetic drives, but they have significantly lower consumption. They have a faster application launch speed and the device wakes up from sleep mode.
  • HDD drives have more capacity at a lower price.

Not surprisingly, laptops with an SSD drive are most often chosen.

Video card

Video cards are integrated (embedded) in the processor core and high-performance discrete ones with a separate chip and video memory.

Gamers choose discrete video adapters, which are significantly more expensive. Integrated video cores are chosen for work and watching movies. But among them, there are good options, such as the AMD platform with a Ryzen processor, where there is a fairly productive and powerful video core.

Battery life

This time may vary depending on the apps you use, battery capacity, monitor brightness settings, and more. Of great importance is the duration of work without recharging the laptop. Working with text documents takes one level of consumption while playing games takes a completely different level. Therefore, the operating time of the device declared by the manufacturer is an approximate value.

Main interfaces

  • There is a USB interface in any, even the most budget laptop.
  • HDMI / DP – video interfaces that are necessary to display an image on a TV screen or other monitor.

If you need an additional video output, then check in advance for the availability of USB adapters and accessories in the kit.
