How to Calculate Percentage of Marks

Concept of Percentage: Percent is a combination of two words. Per and Cent, Per means out of and Cent means 100. Thus percent means out of every hundred. The symbols used for percent is %.

9% means 9/100.

100% means 100/100

Lets us take some examples to calculate the percentage of marks.

Example 1:

In a class test if you got 7.3 marks out of 10. Find the percentage of marks you got?

Solution: Total Mark = 10. Mark obtained = 7.3.

Required Percentage = Marks obtained/Total Marks × 100%

= 7.3/10 × 100%

= 73/100 × 100%

= 73%

Example 2:

If you got 75 marks out of 80 in a mathematics test. Find the percentage of marks you got?

Solution: Total marks = 80. Marks obtained = 75.

Required percentage = Marks obtained/Total marks × 100%.

= 75/80 x 100 %

= 75/4 x 5 %

= 375/4 %

= 93.75 %

Note:

Example 3:

If a student got 99 marks out of 150 in science exam. Find the required percentage?

Solution: Total marks = 150. Marks Obtained = 99.

Required percentage = 99/150 × 100%

= 99/15 x 10%

= 990/15%

= 66%

Note:

Example 4:

In the final examination, Ram scored marks in each subject are given below:

Subject Marks obtained Total Marks
English 75 100
Math 95 100
Science 93 100
Hindi 79 100
S.St 90 100
Computer 91 100

Find the total percentage.

Solution: Total marks = 600. Total marks obtained = 523.

Required Percentage = 523/600 × 100%

= 523/6%

= 87.16%

Note:

At last, we conclude that the percentage is a very very important and basic topic. It is used in everyday life like discounts in shops, bank interest rates, etc.
