Google to merge Google Meet and Duo to create unified video calling platform

google meet

Google is updating the Duo interface soon to include all the features of Google Meet. This will create a single platform for video calls and meetings called Google Meet. Existing Duo video calling features will remain.

The current Meet app will be renamed “Meet Original” and then retired.

Google:

In the coming weeks, we’ll be bringing all the features of Google Meet to the Duo app so users can easily schedule video calls at a time that’s convenient for everyone, or continue using video calls to instantly connect with a person or group. Later this year, we’ll be rebranding the Duo app as Google Meet, our unified video-conferencing service at Google, which is available to everyone for free

Existing Duo video calling features will remain, including video calling a phone number or email address, using filters and effects, sending messages, and using the Google Assistant. All conversation history, contacts, and messages will still be saved in the application.

  • scheduling meetings so that each participant can join at a convenient time;
  • using chat during a meeting;
  • the ability to share content in real time;
  • closed captioning in real time;
  • increase in video call participants from 32 to 100 people;
  • integration with other tools including Gmail, Google Calendar, Assistant, Messages, etc.
