Google Releases 2021 Search Engine Spam Report

Google has released its annual search spam report. According to the data, the SpamBrain spam identification system, based on machine learning, detected 6 times more spam sites in 2021 than in 2020.

  • The number of spam sites that were hacked dropped by 70%. The number of fraudulent sites decreased by 40%.
  • Google was able to detect and ensure that 99% of queries were spam-free.

Google claims that it has made progress in the fight against various types of spam – the search engine is better at detecting fraudulent, hacked, low-quality sites. Google has also learned to better recognize unnatural links in different languages and exclude their impact on search results.

In addition, the search engine is making efforts to reduce the amount of low-quality content and ranking manipulation. For example, in order to reduce the number of sites that use unethical methods in the search results, the search engine changed the way it handles product reviews and allowed users to report low-quality resources directly from the search results page.

Recall that in last year’s report on web spam, Google said that it detects 40 billion spam pages daily.
