NNAL produced when 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) gets in the body. NNK belongs to a group of chemicals named tobacco-specific n-nitrosamines (TSNA). This group of chemicals is found only in tobacco and products derived from tobacco. TSNA are chemically knit together to nicotine and other tobacco alkaloids, and they exist particularly in tobacco leaves.

Generally, in smokers, NNAL levels were related mutually with the number of cigarettes smoked. Whereas, in non-smokers, NNAL levels were correlated with the amount of Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure.

Compare with full-time smokers, vape users have 97% lower levels of NNAL toxic chemical. But there was a little difference in NNAL levels between cigarette-only users and those who smoke both real cigarettes and vape.

In addition, The Cancer Research UK scientists studied that more than 100 individuals including smokers and ex-smokers are using e-cigarettes or NRT products as a smoking alternative. Besides, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a medically-approved method to take nicotine other than tobacco.

Referring to studies, nicotine replacement therapy is equally as effective as medications in helping people quit smoking for at least 6 months. Types of nicotine replacement therapy have similar success rates in terms of helping people stop smoking are like lozenges, patches, inhaler and nicotine gums.
