Are you planning to go on a birding tour for the first time in life? Well, there is always a first time for everything. You should not be nervous and instead, be excited about it. Have you decided on the travel company who will organize the tour? Don’t even think of doing the trip on your own especially because this is your first time. There are a lot of things that you still don’t know and professional expertise will be required in such a trip. So, research thoroughly and find an experienced and reputed company for your bird watching tour.
Despite enrolling into the China birding tour by a renowned company, you are still likely to make a few mistakes. And there is nothing wrong with it. This is how you learn. So, here we have put together a few mistakes that you need to keep in mind while going on a birding tour. Take a look.
1. Avoid Bright Hues
When you embark on a birding trip, avoid wearing bright clothes. Bright colors like white will amplify your movement and create a stark contrast against your surroundings. Birds can see more colors than us and are sensitive to colors which create more contrast than what they are used to seeing. Go for subdued, earthy tones that will mix with the surrounding so that the birds are not uncomfortable.
2. Don’t Make Loud Noises
Nowadays, wherever you go, your smartphone is always with you. And what follows is a number of phone calls, message tones, and several noises. But when you are on a birding trip, you cannot make loud noises. If you create any noise with your phone or anything else, then you will scare the bird away. Even other birders on the tour will get disturbed if you make a noise.
3. Don’t Get Too Close
When you are on a birding tour, you must learn to think like a bird. How would you feel if animals came into your habitat and made uncomfortable advances? You will obviously feel threatened and try to escape. Similarly, with birds, if you cross the line too far, then they will either attack you or simply run away. Either way, your purpose will not be served. So, try to keep a distance when you are watching them despite the temptation to get closer, especially for a photo.
4. Forgetting or Ignoring a Field Guide
If you are serious about birding, you have to constantly take notes, refer to your field guide, and observe every bird carefully. If you don’t carry a good field guide, it will be inconvenient because you might get stuck somewhere and need to know the name or features of a bird you are viewing. Having this at hand will be of immense help. So, don’t even think of forgetting it at home or elsewhere.
5. Neglecting Binoculars
Binoculars are the most important tools for birding. If you forget to carry them, then you will be in a huge mess. Without these, you will not be able to locate the birds at a distance, and zooming in with cameras or borrowing from other fellows is not a good idea. Although if you choose the right company, you can get these for rent but sometimes these are also found in limited numbers. In that case, you will be the one on the losing end.
So, now that you know about these, make sure you don’t repeat these before going to the Yunnan or Sichuan birding tours, or anywhere else in China for a bird watching tour.
